Casual golf fan here for years, what makes the PGA Championship and US Open unique from each other when they eventually use the same courses for their tournaments?

There is definitely a clear style of course in Augusta and the Links' courses in the UK. I've been casually following golf for about a decade and thought the PGA had it's own rotation and USGA had it's own for their majors. So I was surprised to find that some courses that were US Open courses were also used for the PGA and vice versa.
